International Working Group for Wax Models (IWWM)

Medical wax model collections have been the subject of renewed scientific interest since the turn of the millennium. As part of the material turn, scholars in history and cultural studies increasingly study historical objects in museums and university collections. Wax moulages in particular, with their specific characteristics, have attracted attention from medical professionals and historians alike.

A German-speaking Moulages Working Group was formed in Berlin in 2013, following a major international conference in Dresden 2009. Ten years later, at a meeting in Zurich in 2023, the circle of participants was expanded to represent collections from all over the world. As an international working group, we now take the next step and join the newly founded International Association of Medical Museums and Collections (IAMMC) as the International Working Group on Medical Wax Models (IWWM).

The aim of the IWWM is to:

  • expand the network among the collections
  • ensure professional conservation and restoration

  • consider ethical aspects of the use of wax moulages

  • support the use of wax moulages as

    • historical documents

    • cultural assets

    • in modern teaching

    • in public exhibitions

  • promote local and international research projects

  • improve financing options

Meeting in Bologna 2027

We are pleased to announce that the next meeting of the International Working Group on Medical Wax Models (IWWM) will take place in Bologna on the 27th and 28th of September 2027.

Our host will be the University of Bologna, an institution with a long history in the field of medicine and the birthplace of one of the most renowned schools of anatomical wax modelling in Europe. The meeting will be held in the setting of the "Luigi Cattaneo" Anatomical Wax Collection, housed within the Human Anatomy Institute.

The meeting has been scheduled in coordination with the International Association of Medical Museums and Collections (IAMMC), whose Second Biannual Conference will be held at the University of Padua from 29 September to 1 October 2027. As Bologna and Padua are very close to each other, participants will be able to easily attend both events.

Details on the programme, travel and accommodation, as well as the call for papers, will be announced in the coming months. In the meantime, we warmly encourage you to pass this news on to colleagues and institutions who may be interested.

See you soon in Bologna!
Kind regards,

The Organising Committee
International Working Group on Medical Wax Models
